The Islamic Centre was established in 1968 by a group of Pakistani Muslims settled in Leicester. The Centre was and is still based at 2a Sutherland Street and is one of the oldest Mosques in Leicester. This is a Mosque converted from residential properties. In the midst of the 1970s, when Muslims from East Africa and other countries started to come and settle in Leicester, the Mosque underwent an extension and refreshment with the additional participation of Muslims of Indian and Bangladeshi origin

A Mosque or Masjid holds a very important place in the life of a Muslim. It is the centre of his cultural, social and religious life. The Mosque is not just a house of prayer where Muslims congregate for worship; it is also a place where they meet with fellow Muslims and learn about Islam and the Islamic Ummah (community). The Mosque is a symbol of the physical presence of Islam in the country and a rallying centre for the Muslims as a community.

Sunni Rizvi Jamia Masjid was opened in 2000 by members of the Qadiri-Rizvi Sufi order to provide a place of prayer and community center for the Muslims of Jersey City, and the Downtown area in particular.
