It was in 1992 that officials from Malaysia came to Canada to meet with several beef companies, hoping to find a facility that would be willing to convert to Zabiha in order to supply Halal beef to their country. One of the companies approached was MGI Beef Packers, a mid-sized plant that was owned and operated by a group of investors, including the Muller family.
